Star Ceiling Care: Maintenance, Lifespan & Troubleshooting

Here's the honest maintenance guide for a fiber optic star ceiling: there's very little to maintain. Because the star points are glass fiber tips with no electronics behind them, the parts that could age simply aren't at the ceiling. Still, a few habits keep the system perfect for decades — and it helps to know what to check on the rare occasion something looks off.

Routine care (twice a year)

• Dust the panel faces with a dry microfiber cloth or a gentle vacuum pass with a soft brush head. Dust is the only thing that dims a star field, and it does so gradually.
• Avoid liquids and solvents — the black acoustic face doesn't want cleaning sprays. Dry contact only.
• Glance at the controller vents and keep them unobstructed; it's the only component that produces (minimal) heat.

How long does it all last?

The fibers themselves are effectively lifetime components — glass doesn't wear out from carrying light. The controller's light engine is rated for tens of thousands of hours; at a typical three hours per evening, that's decades of nightly skies. Troubleshooting the rare issues

A section of stars went dark. Almost always a fiber bundle that's unseated from the controller — reseat it and the section returns. App won't connect. Power-cycle the controller and re-pair; the quick start guide covers pairing step by step. One panel looks dimmer. Check its bundle routing for a tight kink; fibers want gentle curves. If any of these persist, our support team resolves most cases from a photo and your order number — start at the Help Center or go straight to contact support.

If you move house

Panels unmount individually and reinstall with fresh hardware, so the sky moves with you. Photograph your layout before unmounting (star patterns are randomized per panel and you may want the same arrangement), coil fiber bundles loosely, and ship the controller in its original padding if you kept it.
