Measure the length and width of the area you want to cover, in feet. This doesn't have to be the whole ceiling — some of the best installations are a defined "sky zone" above the bed or seating area, framed by the surrounding ceiling. Write both dimensions down: the kit is sold by ceiling dimension, so these two numbers are exactly what you order against.

Worked example

For an 8 × 6 ft rectangular feature zone, the matching kit is the 6 × 8 ft configuration — it covers the measured zone exactly. For a 7 × 5 ft zone, step up to that same 6 × 8 ft kit rather than down to 4 × 6 ft: a kit smaller than the measured zone on either dimension leaves bare ceiling at the border. These are planning estimates; the measured boundary and fixed ceiling features still determine whether the proposed grid is practical.
