How to Plan a Star Ceiling Layout Before Installation
A clear star ceiling layout begins with a measured boundary. Decide where the panel zone will start and end, mark every fixed ceiling feature, and then estimate the standard panel positions needed to meet or exceed the zone dimensions. The estimate is a planning aid, not proof that panels physically fit the boundary.
The goal of this guide is a room drawing that can be checked before installation. It focuses on the zone, borders, obstructions, sightlines, connection questions, and the information support needs to review an unusual plan.
1. Define the panel zone
Start by deciding which part of the ceiling will contain panels. It may be the full ceiling or a defined feature above a bed, seating area, desk, or screen.
Draw the full room outline first. Then add the proposed panel-zone boundary inside it. This keeps the surrounding border visible and makes it easier to compare a room-centered layout with one centered on the way the room is used.
Keep the first boundary simple. A clean rectangle is easier to measure and review. For an irregular shape, dividing the zone into non-overlapping rectangles can produce a conservative starting estimate. It does not confirm that differently oriented grids join cleanly or fit an irregular edge, so preserve the divisions on the drawing and ask support to review shared boundaries.
2. Measure length and width
Measure the finished length and width of the proposed panel zone. Use the same unit for both dimensions.
Record:
- Full room length and width
- Panel-zone length and width
- Distance from the panel-zone boundary to each wall
- Location of every fixed ceiling feature
Do not rely on a rough room listing or floor-plan label. Use the actual finished dimensions of the proposed panel zone and keep the full room outline on the same drawing.
3. Estimate a starting grid

Treat the result as a conservative starting count. When a room dimension is not an exact panel multiple, the nominal grid can extend beyond the measured boundary. That does not establish physical fit or permission to cut, trim, or otherwise modify a panel. Revise the zone or ask support to review it.
For a zone divided into rectangles, keep every division visible on the drawing. Independently estimated sections do not prove that their grid directions join cleanly at a shared edge.
4. Mark every fixed ceiling feature
Add every item that may interrupt the proposed grid:
- Lights
- Vents and grilles
- Speakers
- Beams and soffits
- Access panels
- Projectors and their beam path
- Detectors, sprinklers, and other required equipment

5. Compare the grid, not just the count

- Rows and columns: Does the drawing match the geometric calculation?
- Borders: Are the remaining margins intentional?
- Fixed features: Does any panel position overlap a marked feature?
- Room focus: Is the zone aligned with the bed, seating, screen, or other intended focal point?
A lower count is useful only when the grid also makes sense in the room. If neither panel format produces a clear plan, send the drawing to support instead of forcing the boundary.

6. Match the count to a current room kit
Current room-kit counts are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 panels. Choose the smallest sold configuration that is equal to or higher than the estimate; do not round down. Estimates above 30 panels require a project review rather than an assumed configuration.

7. Add the system review points

- Ceiling type
- Clear photos of the full ceiling
- A marked drawing with fixed features
- The calculated 2x2 count

Treating area as a finished layout
Area alone does not show borders, rows, columns, or fixture conflicts. Use the format comparison to estimate panel positions, then draw the grid against the measured room.
Drawing fixtures after the grid

Treating the estimate as approval
